Challenged?

Deuteronomy 6:4-9

And these words, which I command Thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes. And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates.

Do you feel challenged after reading that? I do. Last week I spent 3 hours everyday sitting on a train going to and from London. That was a lot of time on my hands so I spent a good amount of time in the word. I read across this passage of scripture and wasn't able to continue. What a challenge that is to me as a parent of a young boy. Not only that I teach the scripturess diligently to my children but that we talk about them and live the scriptures in everything I do. And not only do I live it but my life resounds with the word of God written all over my and my house hold.

Enjoy...

The Proof Of The Scriptures

Okay, so most of you know that my wife is in the hospital right now and has been for several days. Anyways I made some headway in my book this evening after the battery died on our computer. Thus the only thing left was my book, a pen, a piece of paper, and the light. So tonights conversation piece is on the Proof of the Scriptures. The bullet points you see below are summarizations of what Boice talks about in chapter 5.

10 Points that Prove Scripture...

1. Scripture is self aware.
2. The testimony of Jesus Christ.
3. The doctrinal and ethical superiority of the Bible above all other books.
4. The power of the Bible to affect us as we read it.
5. The biblical writers would not have claimed divine origin for a book they knew was purely their own.
6. Unity - the Bible was written or a span of fifteen hundred years and by over 40 people yet "They produced a volume that is a marvelous unity in its doctrine, historical viewpoints, ethic and expectations."
7. Uncommon Accuracy - "...although error is human, inerrancy is certainly divine."
8. Answered Prophecy
9. The Bibles Preservation
10. Changed Lives.

With that I leave you, time to spend some good time reading II Timothy... plenty of cross referencing to do... - Thanks to my brother-in-law and my Dad for these tools of the trade...

sola Scriptura - Scripture Alone

So I have started a new book over the last couple months - yes it has taken me that long to just start it. It is "Foundations of the Christian Faith" by James Montgomery Boice. So far I have made it to the middle of the fourth chapter, so I thought I would give you all some bullets of what I found interesting and challenging. Chapter 4 is on the authority of the scriptures. 1. The Bible is the Word of God. As Boice puts it, "it is the direct 'breathing-out' of God".
2. God not only spoke to create the Bible he continues to speak to us through the Bible. Martin Luther expressed his view on this at the Diet of Worms when he said, "My conscience has been taken captive by the Word of God." Further more, Boice tells us that the scriptures are the voice of a living God not just a book of revealed truths or a collection of books.
3. Sola Scriptura means Scripture alone and was basically the motto or "battle cry" during the reformation. What they really meant was that an individual can have a relationship with Jesus Christ with out having to go through the Church, the Pope, or a Priest.
4. Scriptura sui ipsius interpres - scripture is its own interpreter - the scriptures can and will interpret themselves to the faithful.
5. The Bible Changes us.
6.The Holy Spirit who speaks through the Bible directs its students to Jesus: Jn 15:26
a. The themes of the Old Testament point to Jesus by fitting in with its general themes and fulfilling specific prophecies found there.

Boice ends with this.

To know God we must be taught from the Bible by the Holy Spirit. It is only then that a full awareness of the nature of the Bible and its authority is borne home upon our minds and hearts, and we find ourselves taking a firm stand upon the cherished revelation.

Interesting stuff - I feel challenged already to pour myself into the reading of Gods word.
